SlotZilla opened in April following 14 months and $12 million in building and testing and is now the new thrill in Vegas in a package that includes not only the sexy and strange-looking slot tower looming over Fremont Street but also some new zip-line technology that ensures those with that greed for speed will not go wanting.
Currently, willing riders here surrender an Andrew Jackson to hop on a wire 77 feet above the street to zip through canyons of frenzied light canvases onto a spot some 850 feet downline.
The high-flying Zipline is the first of two rides. The Zoomline opens later this season. For $30, thrill-seekers will be able to take off from a platform 114 feet above the crowds and zoom … well, in a prone “superman” position … some 1,700 feet through the entire length of the Fremont Street Experience — through the four-block-long Viva Vision canopy (the world’s largest video screen) and onto a newly built Main Street landing stage.
While the lower, gentler Zipline option accelerates according to the laws of nature and gravity, the acrophobe-challenging Zoomline will use a first-of-its-kind propulsion launch system that propels flyers from the platform at speeds up to 35 mph. That technology, of course, is complemented by a proprietary braking system and an assurance that no Superman wanna-be will be crashing into any casinos.
Currently, the riders catch a lurching elevator to the 77-foot-high launch point and load up four at a time to take the plunge through Downtown Las Vegas. Cell phones, cameras and purses can ride along in the convenient clip-on pouches provided but those yard-long margaritas will have to hang back. Kids under 13 must zip with pals over 13 and weigh at least 60 pounds (and not more than 300 pounds).
Those who want to gain weight for the ride, or weigh themselves out of a dare, can load up on deep fried twinkies at the Mermaid Casino or head to the Heart Attack Grill for a Chocolate Butterfat Milk Shake and Triple Bypass Hamburger.
For those in need of a quick kick in the pants to get zipping, can down a “Liquid Courage” microbrew beer at Banger Brewing, across from the SlotZilla tower.
