First, consider Red Square at Mandalay Bay, which started this party in 1999 when the resort opened and Dear Leader’s head was on the statue standing outside this bohemian style bar and bistro. But the head went missing one dark and stormy night and then miraculously returned. To keep it from running away again, the head was placed, fittingly like Lenin’s body in Moscow, under glass – but the glass is now located in a vodka locker inside the Red Square bistro known for blinis, caviar and fabulous vodka martinis served on a bar made from a solid block of ice.
Patrons can turn up the cool on their petite soiree by parting the curtains to the frozen vodka vault and playing a little Russian Roulette with a circular palate of exclusive vodka shots. They don furs, hats and boots fitted by a cosmetically enhanced bar maid and cool off in the sub-zero cabin with caviar condiments and soothing Stoli infusions, all served over Lenin’s head and surrounded by $10,000/yr. private vodka stashes cached by local celebs.
Rates: Locker experience is available upon request. No minimum is required. Shots or libations are ordered off the menu where Moscow Mules run $18 and caviar dollops cost $22-$189. Tip: $7.50 Siberian Nachos at Happy Hour fixes any caviar addiction for cold cut prices.
Large parties that want to come into the cold can try Minus5’s locations at Mandalay Bay and Monte Carlo. Spacious rooms carved completely from ice are kept at 5 degrees celsius (23 degrees F). Patrons put on the bear wear as they head through the sealed entry to a Snow Queen setting of seasonally-themed ice sculptures and mesmerizing lighting effects. There they are handed their order (by a “burrr maid” in bustier and fur hat), be it the Frozen A$$ets with three olives, Marilyn Monroe vodka and a splash of cran, or an Icy Margarita with Cuervo Silver, in thick ice vessels made from New Zealand water. A satisfying sit and sip session on a fur-covered frozen ice chair and the Las Vegas boil beyond seems like some far off mirage.
Rates: $17 pp to walk in, up to $75 to add faux fur upgrade, gloves, keepsake Russian hat, two specialty cocktails and framed photo. Average cocktail price: $10. Tip: Patrons should prepare to surrender phone at the door but should inquire about the security of those phones. They should not expect to spend more than an hour in the ice room, usually 40 minutes is plenty.
